Early Life
Sidney J. Kimmel was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on January 16, 1928, to a Jewish family. His father worked as a cab driver during the Great Depression. After serving two tours of duty in the Army and a brief stint at Temple University, Kimmel began his career in the garment industry, starting as an inventory clerk and then as a traveling salesman.
Rise to Success
Kimmel's career took off when he joined Villager as a knitwear designer, eventually becoming president and CEO. In 1970, he founded Jones Apparel Group, which became a leading designer and marketer of branded apparel, footwear, and accessories. He produced notable clothing lines such as Jones New York, Evan-Picone, and 9 West, and secured licensing deals with Ralph Lauren. In 2002, Kimmel stepped down as CEO but remained chairman until 2014 when the company was sold.
