He pursued his education, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Pune University, followed by a Master of Science degree from the same institution. Later, he obtained a PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management) from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.

Mehta's entrepreneurial journey began in 1981 when he founded Emcure Pharmaceuticals. Initially, Emcure served as a contract manufacturer for multinational pharmaceutical companies. Over time, Mehta transitioned the company into selling its own branded generic formulations.
