Samir Mehta was born in 1963 into a Gujarati Jain family in Ahmedabad, India. His upbringing was influenced by his father, Uttam Nathalal Mehta, who founded the Torrent Group in 1959. Samir's family instilled in him the values of perseverance, hard work, and innovation, which shaped his approach to business.
Rise to Success
After earning a Master's degree in Business Management from the B.K. School of Business Management in Ahmedabad, Samir Mehta joined Torrent Pharmaceuticals in 1986. Under his leadership, and alongside his elder brother Sudhir, the Torrent Group has expanded significantly. He has spearheaded strategic acquisitions, product development, and expansion into international markets, particularly in pharmaceuticals and power. In 2025, he led the acquisition of J.B. Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals, further strengthening the company's portfolio.

He has overseen enhancements in operational efficiency and has been instrumental in the company's expansion into new therapies and international markets. Samir Mehta is involved in various charitable initiatives through the UNM Foundation, which focuses on healthcare, education, and environmental sustainability. In March 2024, the Mehta family pledged Rs 5,000 crore to the UNM Foundation to be disbursed over five years, beginning April 1, 2024, focusing on social causes in healthcare, education, ecology, social well-being, and the arts.
