Early Life
Salil Singhal was born in Allahabad, India, in 1946. He received his education from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, graduating with a degree in political science. In 1965, he began his career by joining his father's business, Mewar Oil & General Mills Ltd, in Udaipur, Rajasthan. This company was later renamed PI Industries.
Rise to Success
Singhal's leadership was crucial in the growth of PI Industries. He took the helm in 1979 after his father's passing. Under his guidance, the company expanded its business in agrochemicals, pesticides, and fine chemicals. He helped establish Wolkem India Ltd, a company focusing on mining and mineral businesses, and Secure Meters Limited, which manufactured electronic energy meters. His business development skills expanded the company into the global market, with operations in over 50 countries.
Key Business Strategies
Singhal focused on research and development, establishing a research hub in Udaipur. He implemented a strategy of manufacturing active ingredients and expanded the company's distribution network directly to farmers. The company also formed a joint venture with Sony Corporation for research in synthetic organic chemicals for the electronics industry.
Philanthropy
After stepping down from the board in 2016, Singhal has devoted a substantial amount of time to philanthropy. He has been involved with various social and educational organizations.
