Ryan Graves was born in 1983 in San Diego, California, where he spent his childhood near the beach. He attended Horizon Christian Academy and later pursued higher education at Miami University in Ohio, graduating in 2006 with a degree in Economics. During his time at university, he was a member of the water polo club team and the Beta Theta Pi fraternity.

Graves' career took a pivotal turn in February 2010 when he became Uber's first employee. He secured the position by responding to a tweet from Travis Kalanick, co-founder of Uber. Graves quickly transitioned from general manager to CEO shortly after the company's launch. He then became the chief operating officer (COO) in December 2010.
