Early Life
Rolf Gerling was born in Cologne, Germany, on December 15, 1954. He is the son of Hans Gerling, founder of Gerling-Konzern, one of the world's largest reinsurance companies. He attended the Montessori school and the Schiller-Gymnasium in Cologne. He studied Economics at the University of Zurich, earning his doctorate in 1986. He also studied analytical psychology at the C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich.
Rise to Success
Gerling inherited a 94% stake in Gerling-Konzern from his father in 1992, which was valued at $1.6 billion. He managed the company until 2005 when he sold his stake to Talanx Group for an estimated $1 billion. During the 1990s, Gerling played a key role in the company's expansion into new markets and financial services. He oversaw the company's expansion and diversification into new markets and other financial services. Gerling then sold his stake to the Talanx Group in 2005.
