Early Life
Robert Martin Friedland was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 18, 1950, to immigrant parents. His father was a Holocaust survivor. He attended Reed College where he graduated in 1974 with a degree in political science, and served as student body president. In his early years, he was known for his rebellious spirit, even serving time in prison.
Rise to Success
Friedland's career took off in the 1980s when he founded Galactic Resources Ltd. He later founded Diamond Fields Resources, which made a significant nickel discovery at Voisey's Bay, Newfoundland. Friedland is best known for founding Ivanhoe Mines (now Turquoise Hill Resources), which discovered major copper deposits in Mongolia. He was inducted into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame in 2016 and the American Hall of Fame in 2021.
