Early Life
Born into a family of timber traders in Macau, Rita Tong Liu developed independence from a young age, assisting her widowed mother in managing the family business. She received early exposure to Western culture and attended high school in the United Kingdom before studying Business Administration at Kansas University and New York University in the late 1960s.
Rise to Success
Liu's entrepreneurial journey began with a family gift of HK$1 million, which she invested in the early 1970s. She founded Gale Well Group in 1976. Over the years, Liu transitioned into commercial office space, capitalizing on the high demand and prices in Hong Kong's financial district. Her strategic decisions, such as investing in car parks during the dot-com bubble and shifting to office and retail space during the SARS epidemic, allowed the company to thrive and expand.
Key Business Strategies
A key strategy for Liu has been to hold properties for the long term, trading up for better properties when selling. Gale Well Group's portfolio includes entire floors in prestigious buildings like Grand Millennium Plaza, Shun Tak Centre, and the Admiralty Centre. Liu is supported by her two younger brothers, Jacinto and Luis Tong, who serve as her key advisors.
Philanthropy
Beyond her business achievements, Rita Tong Liu is a dedicated philanthropist. She founded the L & T Charitable Foundation in 2004 and the Rita T Liu Foundation in 2015. These foundations have donated hundreds of millions of dollars to various organizations in Hong Kong, including higher education institutions and non-governmental organizations.
