Early Life and Education
Richard Hayne was born on May 26, 1947, and grew up in Ingomar, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Lehigh University in 1969 with a degree in anthropology. His college years coincided with the rise of countercultural movements, which influenced his later retail ventures.
Rise to Success
In 1970, Hayne co-founded Urban Outfitters with Judy Wicks. Initially called Free People's Store, it targeted college students near the University of Pennsylvania. The company was renamed Urban Outfitters in 1976, reflecting a broader focus on the urban youth market. Under Hayne's leadership, the company expanded to include brands like Anthropologie, Free People, and Terrain.
