Early Life
Rajnikant Devidas Shroff, widely known as Rajju Shroff, was born in 1933 in Kutch, Gujarat, India, into a family with a background in the textile business. His journey into the world of chemistry and business began early. Following the economic challenges of the 1930s, his father and uncle ventured into manufacturing pain balm and hair oil. Shroff's education included a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Mumbai.
Rise to Success
Shroff's career took flight when he founded UPL Limited in Mumbai in 1969. He pioneered the manufacturing of red phosphorus, a key component for industrial chemicals, which marked the beginning of his impactful contributions to the indigenous chemical industry. Under his leadership, UPL grew into a global agrochemical powerhouse, providing crop protection solutions and expanding its operations to over 130 countries. Shroff's innovative approach included developing a novel process for manufacturing mercury salts, for which he received royalty payments from a British company.

Shroff's success is largely attributed to his strategic vision and ability to adapt to market changes. UPL's acquisition of Arysta LifeSciences in 2018 for $4.2 billion was a pivotal move, propelling UPL to become a top agrochemical company. Furthermore, he has focused on innovation and providing sustainable solutions, with a product range including insecticides, fungicides, and seeds. His leadership style is credited with fostering a work environment where employees are empowered to make decisions, driving the company's growth.

Shroff has been involved in various philanthropic endeavors, including supporting educational institutions and initiatives. He has contributed to the establishment of schools and colleges, such as the Smt. Sandraben Shroff Gnyan Dham School in Vapi, and the ROFEL Shri G.M. Bilakhia College of Pharmacy in Ankleshwar.
