Rafael del Pino Calvo-Sotelo was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1958, into a family deeply rooted in the construction industry. He is the son of Rafael del Pino y Moreno, who founded Ferrovial in 1952. His mother, Ana María Calvo-Sotelo, had connections to political circles, as her brother Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo served as Prime Minister of Spain.

Del Pino earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the Polytechnic University of Madrid in 1981, followed by an MBA from MIT's Sloan School of Management in 1986. He began his career at Ferrovial as a junior engineer before rising to become CEO in 1992 and chairman in 2000. Under his leadership, Ferrovial expanded globally, making major acquisitions and solidifying its position as a leading firm in the sector.
