Early Life and Education
Rafael Del Pino y Calvo-Sotelo was born in Madrid, Spain, on July 14, 1958. He is the son of Rafael del Pino y Moreno, the founder of Ferrovial, a major construction and infrastructure company. He graduated as a civil engineer from the Polytechnic University of Madrid in 1981. He furthered his education with an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management in 1986.
Rise to Success
Rafael del Pino began his career at Ferrovial immediately after finishing his education. He started on a road construction project in Libya. He quickly advanced through the ranks and was appointed CEO in 1992 at the age of 34. Under his leadership, Ferrovial expanded globally, acquiring significant infrastructure projects and companies. He oversaw the acquisition of BAA (British Airports Authority) in 2006, which included Heathrow Airport.
Key Business Strategies
Del Pino has focused on strategic acquisitions and international expansion, particularly in North America. His leadership was instrumental in Ferrovial's diversification into airport management and urban mobility. A key strategy has been to develop and manage essential infrastructure projects across highways, airports, and energy infrastructure. Ferrovial has also been focused on sustainability, committing to reducing carbon emissions. In 2023, Ferrovial relocated its corporate headquarters to the Netherlands.

Del Pino is involved in philanthropy. He established the Fundación Rafael del Pino in 2000 to develop future leaders.
