Early Life
Radhe Shyam Agarwal was born on February 18, 1946, in Kolkata, India, into a Marwari family. He completed his education at St. Xavier's College, Kolkata. He holds an LLB and M.Com from Calcutta University. He is also a Chartered Accountant from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and a Company Secretary from the Institute of Company Secretaries of India. Agarwal started his career in the Aditya Birla Group in 1970 as a vice president.
Rise to Success
In 1974, Agarwal co-founded Emami, a cosmetics company, with his school friend Radhe Shyam Goenka. They started with a capital of $2,600, borrowed from Goenka's father. Emami has grown into a global group of companies with revenues exceeding $1.3 billion. Under his leadership, Emami has become a leading player in the Indian FMCG industry, with a presence in over 60 countries.
Key Business Strategies
Agarwal's business acumen and understanding of consumer preferences have enabled Emami to launch and market a wide range of popular products, including Boroplus antiseptic cream and Fair and Handsome fairness cream for men. The company focused on creating a strong distribution network to ensure product availability in both urban and rural areas. Emami also emphasized ethical business practices and corporate governance. Agarwal and Goenka sold their privately held cement business in 2019 for $730 million.
