Early Life
Prathap C. Reddy was born on February 5, 1933, in Aragonda, Andhra Pradesh, India. Growing up in a rural area, he witnessed the lack of healthcare infrastructure firsthand. This experience fueled his ambition to create a better healthcare system in India. He pursued his medical degree at Stanley Medical College in Chennai. Later, he trained in cardiology in the UK and the US, which exposed him to advanced medical technologies and healthcare systems. His experiences abroad inspired him to return to India and build a domestic healthcare system.
Rise to Success
In 1983, Dr. Reddy founded Apollo Hospitals, which became the first corporate chain of hospitals in India. His vision was to provide world-class healthcare to the people of India. Apollo Hospitals expanded rapidly, and under his leadership, it grew to become one of the largest healthcare providers in Asia. The group operates over 70 hospitals, 6,000 pharmacies and 2,500+ clinics and diagnostic centers. Reddy's commitment to excellence and innovation has earned him numerous awards and recognition, including the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2010.
