Early Life
Paul van Zuydam was born in South Africa as one of seven children. His upbringing on a farm instilled in him the values of hard work and resourcefulness. Like many ambitious South Africans, he sought opportunities abroad, living in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Europe.
Rise to Success
Van Zuydam's career took a pivotal turn when he learned of Le Creuset's struggles in the mid-1980s. As chairman and CEO of homeware giant Prestige, he secretly visited the Fresnoy-le-Grand factory. In 1988, he left Prestige and, with the approval of the French government, acquired Le Creuset in his personal capacity. He focused on concentrating the company's production, automating cast-iron manufacturing to cut costs, and expanding sales outside of Europe.
