Early Life and Education
Panagiotis N. Tsakos was born in 1936 in Kardamyla, on the island of Chios, Greece, a region with a strong maritime heritage. He graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy of Cardamyla, which set the foundation for his lifelong career in shipping.
Rise to Success
Tsakos began his career at sea, rising through the ranks to become a ship's captain. In 1970, he founded Tsakos Shipping & Trading S.A., which later became the core of the Tsakos Group. Under his leadership, the company expanded its operations globally, becoming a significant player in the shipping industry with a diversified fleet including tankers, container ships, and bulk carriers. His son, Nikolas Tsakos, joined the family firm and in 1993, set up tanker firm Tsakos Energy Navigation (TEN).
