Early Life
Niraj Shah was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, to parents who immigrated from India. He was raised in Pittsfield and developed an entrepreneurial spirit from a young age, with ventures including lawn mowing and paper delivery. He met his future Wayfair co-founder, Steve Conine, while attending a program at Cornell University.
Rise to Success
Shah graduated from Cornell University in 1995 with a bachelor's degree in engineering. He and Conine started Spinners Incorporated, an IT services firm, before selling it to iXL in 1998. In 2002, Shah co-founded Wayfair (originally CSN Stores) with Steve Conine. The company started with a single website, selling media stands and storage furniture, and grew into a massive online retailer with numerous niche websites before consolidating under the Wayfair brand. Under Shah's leadership, Wayfair expanded significantly, going public in 2014 (NYSE: W) and becoming one of the largest online home goods retailers. He was recognized as a billionaire in 2017 as Wayfair's market value surged.
