Nihat Özdemir was born on April 5, 1950, in Diyarbakır, Turkey. He received his primary, secondary, and high school education in Diyarbakır. In 1967, he moved to Ankara to attend university. He graduated from Gazi University's Faculty of Engineering and Architecture as a mechanical engineer. While at university, he assisted Necmettin Erbakan, who later became a minister in Turkey. He also holds a master's degree in Industrial Engineering from Ege University.

Özdemir founded Limak Holding in 1976 with Sezai Bacaksız, a fellow student from Gazi University. Özdemir focused on cement and energy, while Bacaksız focused on airports and tourism.
