Early Life and Education
Neil Shen was born in Haining, Zhejiang, China, in December 1967. He attended Shanghai No. 2 High School, where he excelled in mathematics. Shen earned a Bachelor's degree in applied mathematics from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1989. He then pursued a Master's degree in management from Yale University, which he completed in 1992.
Rise to Success
After graduating from Yale, Shen worked for Citibank. He later moved to Hong Kong to work as an investment banker at Lehman Brothers and Deutsche Bank. In 1999, Shen co-founded Ctrip.com (now Trip.com Group), and Home Inns, which became very successful. His move to Sequoia Capital (now HongShan) in 2005 marked a turning point, leading him to build one of the most successful venture capital firms in Asia. His early investments in companies like Meituan, Pinduoduo, and ByteDance generated significant returns. His consistent success has solidified his position as a leading investor.
