Early Life
Mustafa Rahmi Koç was born in Ankara, Turkey, on October 9, 1930. He is the son of Vehbi Koç, the founder of Koç Holding, and Sadberk Koç. He attended Robert College in Istanbul and later pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree in Industrial Management from Johns Hopkins University in the United States.
Rise to Success
Rahmi Koç joined the family business, Koç Group, in 1958 after completing his military service. He held various positions within the company, including working at Otokoç Company in Ankara. In 1964, when the headquarters of Koç Holding A. Ş. moved to Istanbul, Mustafa Koç became the general coordinator. He continued to rise through the ranks, becoming the chairman of the executive committee in 1970 and the deputy chairman of the board of management in 1975. In 1980, he was appointed chairman of the Koç Holding management committee. On March 30, 1984, he succeeded his father, Vehbi Koç, as the chairman of Koç Holding. He held this position until April 4, 2003, when he retired and passed the chairmanship to his son, Mustafa Koç. Currently, Mustafa Rahmi Koç serves as the Honorary Chairman of Koç Holding.
