Mohed Altrad's early life was marked by hardship and a challenging upbringing. Born into a Bedouin tribe in the Syrian desert, his birth was not formally recorded. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised by his grandmother, who initially discouraged his pursuit of education. Despite these obstacles, Altrad was determined to learn, walking long distances to attend school.
Rise to Success
His academic achievements earned him a scholarship to study in France, where he pursued degrees in physics, mathematics, and a Ph.D. in computer science. After working in the IT sector for the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, he shifted his focus to entrepreneurship. In 1985, he acquired a struggling scaffolding company in France, which he transformed into the Altrad Group.
