Early Life
Miuccia Prada, born Maria Bianchi on May 10, 1949, in Milan, Italy, is the youngest granddaughter of Mario Prada, who founded the luxury goods company in 1913. She studied political science at the University of Milan and later earned a Ph.D. She also trained to be a mime artist at the Piccolo Teatro.
Rise to Success
Miuccia Prada joined the family business in 1970, initially managing one of the two remaining stores. In 1978, she took over the company, and with her husband, Patrizio Bertelli, began to modernize the brand. They introduced nylon handbags in 1985, and her first women's ready-to-wear collection was launched in 1988. She launched the Miu Miu line in 1992.
Key Business Strategies
Prada, with the business acumen of her husband, expanded the company's offerings to include footwear, ready-to-wear collections, and fragrances. They focused on expanding retail channels, opening boutiques in key cities. A key strategy was the expansion of the brand and creating a luxury conglomerate. They also launched a subsidiary brand, Miu Miu, and partnered with other luxury brands.
Philanthropy
Miuccia and Patrizio Bertelli founded the Fondazione Prada in 1993, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting contemporary art and culture.
