Early Life
Miquel Fluxà Rosselló was born in Majorca, Spain, in July 1938. He is the grandson of Antonio Fluxà, who founded the shoe-making shop Lottusse in Majorca in 1877. His father, Llorenç Fluxà Figuerola, expanded the family business into hospitality. Fluxà grew up in an entrepreneurial household, with his upbringing shaping his commitment to business excellence.
Rise to Success
In 1956, Llorenç Fluxà acquired Viajes Iberia, a travel agency, marking the family's initial venture into tourism. Miquel joined his father and eventually took over the tourism business. He started the Iberostar brand in 1983 with hotels in Majorca and the Canary Islands. He expanded the group through acquisitions and international expansion, including the opening of the first international location in the Dominican Republic in 1993.
Key Business Strategies
Fluxà's key strategies included expanding Iberostar's presence globally by acquiring an airline and cruise company and focusing on high-end resorts. He sold most of the group's tourism businesses in 2006 to concentrate on the hotel division. He also formed a long-term commercial alliance with InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) in 2022 to develop beachfront resorts.
Philanthropy
In 2004, Fluxà founded Fundacion Iberostar, a non-profit organization promoting sustainable tourism and social responsibility.
