Early Life
Miquel Fluxà Rosselló was born in July 1938, in Majorca, Spain. He is the grandson of Antonio Fluxà, who founded the shoe-making shop Lottusse in Majorca in 1877. His father, Llorenç Fluxà Figuerola, expanded the family business into hospitality. He has two brothers, Antonio, who led Lottusse until his death in 2015, and Lorenzo, who founded Camper in 1975.
Rise to Success
Fluxà joined the family company, which was still small, and founded the first Iberostar hotels in Majorca and the Canary Islands in 1986. After his father's death in 1993, he led the opening of the group's first international location in the Dominican Republic. He has since expanded the group through acquisitions, including an airline company and a cruise company. In 2006, he sold the group's tour operator and travel agency divisions to the Carlyle Group for $950 million.
Key Business Strategies
Fluxà's key business strategy involved expanding Grupo Iberostar into a global hotel chain. The company focuses on beachfront hotels. In November 2022, Iberostar signed a long-term commercial alliance with InterContinental Hotels Group PLC (IHG). Iberostar is committed to sustainable tourism and has initiatives focused on the environment.
Philanthropy
In 2004, Fluxà founded the Fundacion Iberostar, a non-profit organization that promotes sustainable tourism and social responsibility. The foundation focuses on improving the quality of life and living conditions, promoting education, and addressing social and cultural needs of communities in developing countries.
