Early Life
Yongmee Michele Kang, born on June 1, 1959, in Seoul, South Korea. Kang's upbringing in Seoul instilled in her a strong work ethic and a desire to challenge the status quo. Recognizing limited opportunities for women in South Korea, she moved to the United States to pursue higher education. She studied at Ewha Womans University before attending the University of Chicago, where she earned a bachelor's degree in economics, and later received a master's degree in public and private management from the Yale School of Management.
Rise to Success
Kang's career began as a management consultant, advising companies on technology innovation. She held senior executive positions, including Vice President of Northrop Grumman's Health Solutions division, where she quadrupled the division's revenue. In 2008, she founded Cognosante, a health IT company that became a trusted provider for federal health, military, and intelligence agencies. Cognosante was sold to Accenture Federal Services in May 2024. In 2022, Kang became the first woman of color to own a team in the National Women's Soccer League, acquiring the Washington Spirit. She expanded her influence in women's soccer, becoming majority owner of OL Lyonnes and London City Lionesses. In 2024, Kang launched Kynisca Sports International, the first global multi-team organization dedicated to professionalizing women's football.
