Michael Ying was born in December 1949 in Hong Kong. His family originated from Wenchang, Hainan, China. He began his career in the garment industry as a laborer before rising to become Esprit's primary sourcing agent in the 1970s.

Ying joined Esprit in 1971 as its primary sourcing agent. In 2002, he acquired full ownership of the company, serving as its chairman and CEO until 2006. Under his leadership, Esprit's annual sales grew dramatically, expanding its presence across Europe, Asia, and beyond.
