Michael Otto was born on April 12, 1943, in Chełmno, Poland (then part of Germany). He grew up in Hamburg, Germany. His father, Werner Otto, founded the Otto Group in 1949 as a mail-order business. Michael Otto joined the family business, Otto Group, in 1971. He became Chairman of the Executive Board in 1981 and led the company for 26 years until 2007.
