Early Life
Michael Kum Soh Har was born in Singapore in 1945 to parents who were hawkers. Growing up in a modest environment, he learned the value of hard work and perseverance. He pursued his education, earning a Certificate in Higher Commercial Law and Cost Accounting from the London Chamber of Commerce in 1966.
Rise to Success
Kum began his career in 1969 as the Finance and Administration Manager for Marine Charters (Singapore) Pte Ltd. In 1976, he co-founded Offshore Equipment Pte Ltd, which chartered offshore support vessels and barges in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Under his leadership, the company grew significantly. In 2009, Kum set up Grandline International Limited to focus on real estate hospitality investments. This marked his entry into the hotel industry. His company M&L Hospitality owns 12 properties across five countries. In June 2025, he acquired Hotel Maria in Helsinki, Finland, which will be rebranded as Waldorf Astoria Helsinki and managed by Hilton.
Key Business Strategies
Kum's key business strategies involve a hands-on approach. His formula for hotel acquisitions focuses on central business districts and locations near train stations and airports. He has shown a willingness to sell properties when it makes strategic sense. Kum’s M&L Hospitality also focuses on acquiring and developing properties in key markets with a view to expanding their empire.
Philanthropy
Michael Kum is a strong advocate for education and has established scholarships to support students from disadvantaged backgrounds. He is a recipient of the Public Service Medal (PBM) from the Singapore government for his contributions to the community.
