Mathias Döpfner was born on January 15, 1963, in Bonn, Germany. He grew up in Offenbach am Main. He studied musicology, German literature, and theater science in Frankfurt and Boston. He earned a Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Frankfurt in 1990.
Rise to Success
Döpfner began his career in journalism in 1982 as a music critic for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. He then held various editorial positions before joining Axel Springer SE in 1998. He became CEO in 2002. Under his leadership, Axel Springer has expanded its digital presence and acquired numerous media properties, including Politico and Business Insider. Friede Springer, the head of the media group, designated Döpfner as her successor in 2020 and gave voting rights and shares valued at over 1 billion Euros to him in 2021.
