Early Life
Martua Sitorus, originally named Thio Seng Hap, was born in 1960 in Pematang Siantar, North Sumatra, Indonesia. He came from a modest family of Chinese-Indonesian descent. Growing up, he contributed to his family's income by selling shrimp and fish. He studied economics at HKBP Nommensen University in Medan.
Rise to Success
Sitorus began his business career in palm oil trading. In 1991, he co-founded Wilmar International with Kuok Khoon Hong. Wilmar International quickly grew into the world's largest palm oil producer. Under his leadership as Chief Operating Officer and later Executive Deputy Chairman, Wilmar expanded globally. In 2011, he co-founded KPN Corporation (formerly Gama Corporation) with his brother, diversifying into palm oil plantations, property development, and cement production. He resigned from the board of Wilmar in 2018.
Key Business Strategies
Sitorus's success is attributed to his strategic vision and operational efficiency. His early focus on palm oil trading, coupled with the establishment of Wilmar International, was key. Wilmar's integrated agribusiness model, from origination to distribution, has been a cornerstone of its strategy. His diversification into other sectors, such as property development and cement manufacturing through KPN Corporation, further solidified his wealth and influence.
