Martin Ebner was born on August 12, 1945, in Hurden, Switzerland. He grew up near Pfäffikon SZ. He studied law at the University of Zurich, graduating magna cum laude, and later earned a PhD in business administration from the University of Florida.

Ebner's career began at Credit Suisse and Bank Vontobel. In 1985, he founded BZ Bank, followed by BZ Group in 1988.
