Early Life and Education
Markus Blocher was born in Zürich, Switzerland, on April 16, 1971. He is the son of Christoph Blocher, a former member of the Swiss Federal Council, and the younger brother of National Councilor Magdalena Martullo-Blocher. Growing up in a politically influential family, he received a quality education and had an early interest in the United States Army. He completed his doctorate in chemistry at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in 2000.
Rise to Success
After graduating, Markus Blocher began his career as a consultant at McKinsey & Company for three years. In 2002, he joined EMS-Chemie, a chemical company, where he became Vice President of Special Projects. In 2003, he became the managing director of Dottikon ES, a subsidiary of the EMS Group. Under his leadership, Dottikon ES experienced significant growth and was listed on the stock exchange in 2005. In November 2005, he exchanged his controlling shares in EMS-Chemie for Dottikon, becoming the majority owner.
