Early Life
Luciano Benetton was born in Treviso, Italy, on May 13, 1935. His father's passing at an early age led Luciano to leave school at 14 to work in a clothing store. This early exposure to the retail world laid the foundation for his future entrepreneurial endeavors.
Rise to Success
In 1965, Luciano, along with his siblings Giuliana, Carlo, and Gilberto, founded the Benetton Group. Starting as a small knitwear business, the company quickly gained recognition for its colorful sweaters. Luciano's innovative approach, which included franchising and a unique dyeing process, fueled rapid expansion. The Benetton Group opened its first store outside of Italy in Paris in 1969.
Key Business Strategies
Benetton's success was fueled by several key strategies. The company focused on vibrant, accessible knitwear, and an innovative franchise model allowing independent retailers to stock Benetton clothing. Their advertising campaigns, often controversial and designed by Oliviero Toscani, were instrumental in establishing the brand's identity and global presence.
Philanthropy
Luciano Benetton has demonstrated a commitment to philanthropy. He founded the Imago Mundi Collection in 2006, which showcases contemporary art from around the world. Benetton has also shown commitment to social and environmental causes.
