Lin Jianhua was born in October 1955, in Baotou, Inner Mongolia, China. His ancestral home is in Gaomi, Shandong. During the Cultural Revolution, he taught at a school in Jalaid Banner, Inner Mongolia. Lin earned a doctorate in chemistry from Peking University in 1986. He pursued further studies at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research, Iowa State University, and Ames Laboratory between 1988 and 1993.
