Liang Wengen was born in 1956 in Maotang, Hunan province, China, to a peasant family. He showed great determination from an early age. Liang holds a Bachelor of Arts/Science degree from Central South University.

Before founding Sany Group, Liang worked as a top manager at a state arms plant. In 1989, he co-founded Sany Group, a heavy industry manufacturer based in Changsha, Hunan. Under his leadership, Sany Group grew into one of the world's leading manufacturers of construction machinery. In 2011, Liang became the richest man in mainland China with a net worth of about USD 8 billion. As of November 2018, he was the 68th richest person in China, with a net worth of about $3.5 billion. In 2023, Liang retired as the chairman of Sany Group, but retained his position as a director.
