Early Life
Len Blavatnik was born in Odessa, Ukrainian SSR (now Ukraine), on June 14, 1957. He is from a Jewish family. His family moved to Yaroslavl, Russia, when he was a child. He attended the Moscow State University of Railway Engineering but did not complete his coursework due to his family's request for emigration visas. In 1978, the Blavatnik family emigrated to the United States.
Rise to Success
Blavatnik pursued higher education in the U.S., earning a master's degree in computer science from Columbia University in 1981 and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1989. In 1986, he founded Access Industries, a privately held industrial group with global investments in various sectors. He made an early fortune from the Russian oil company TNK-BP. In 2011, Blavatnik acquired Warner Music Group for $3.3 billion and took the company public in June 2020 at quadruple the value.

Philanthropy
Blavatnik has given or pledged over $1 billion to philanthropy, mostly to universities, including Oxford, Stanford, Harvard, and Yale. He established the Blavatnik Family Foundation, supporting higher education, good governance, early-stage scientific research, arts and culture, and Jewish history. In 2017, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to philanthropy.
