Lachhman Das Mittal was born in 1930 in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, India. He earned Master of Arts degrees in English and Urdu from Panjab University, demonstrating early academic excellence and even earning a gold medal. Before embarking on his entrepreneurial journey, Mittal started his career as an insurance agent with the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) in 1955.

Mittal's entrepreneurial career began after retiring from LIC. In 1969, he incorporated the Sonalika Group. Initially, he ventured into manufacturing farm implements. The pivotal moment arrived in 1996 when he established Sonalika Tractors. Under his leadership, Sonalika Tractors has become the third-largest tractor manufacturer in India by market share.
