Kerry Matthew Stokes was born John Patrick Alford on September 13, 1940, in Melbourne, Australia. He was adopted shortly after birth and raised in modest circumstances. He left school at age 14 and began his professional journey.
Rise to Success
Stokes's career began with installing television antennas, followed by property development in Perth during the 1960s and 1970s. His ventures included building shopping centers. He later invested in the Caterpillar franchise, which became WesTrac, an equipment dealer. Stokes then expanded into the media sector, acquiring television and radio stations, as well as magazine publishing businesses. In 1996, he acquired a stake in the Seven Network (now Seven West Media), where he served as chairman. Seven West Media became Australia’s largest diversified media business.
