Early Life
Juan Roig Alfonso was born on October 8, 1949, in Valencia, Spain. His early life was rooted in a family that ran a chain of butcher shops, which later evolved into grocery stores. Roig studied economics at the University of Valencia and furthered his education with a postgraduate degree at IESE Business School.
Rise to Success
In 1981, Juan Roig, along with his brothers, purchased the family's grocery stores from their parents. Under his leadership, the business was expanded into the successful Mercadona supermarket chain. Key strategies included a focus on competitive pricing and technological innovations, such as barcode scanners and automated distribution facilities. Roig introduced full-time contracts for all employees in the late 1990s, ensuring job security and benefits.
Key Business Strategies
Mercadona's success is attributed to several key business strategies, including a customer-centric approach, efficient operations, and employee-focused policies. These strategies have made Mercadona a model for other businesses. Roig's emphasis on innovation and efficiency has kept Mercadona at the forefront of the retail industry.
Philanthropy
Through his wholly owned company, Alquería Capital, Roig supports entrepreneurship by helping young entrepreneurs set up their businesses and offering them space within the Lanzadera Business Centre in Valencia.
