Early Life
Joseph Reeves Hyde III, known as Pitt Hyde, was born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1942. He came from a family deeply rooted in the business community. His grandfather founded Malone & Hyde, a wholesale grocery business.
Rise to Success
Hyde earned a degree in economics from the University of North Carolina in 1965. He joined the family business, Malone & Hyde, and rose to become its president and CEO in 1972. In 1979, Hyde launched Auto Shack, later AutoZone, recognizing an opportunity in the auto parts market. He led AutoZone's expansion, taking it public in 1991 and growing it to over 1,500 stores by 1997.
Key Business Strategies
Hyde focused on customer service and employee training, standardizing operations and emphasizing customer assistance. This customer-centric approach helped AutoZone become a leading retailer.
Philanthropy
Hyde, along with his wife Barbara, founded the Hyde Family Foundation in 1992. The foundation has contributed significantly to various local causes, including education reform, the National Civil Rights Museum, and community development initiatives in Memphis.
