Early Life and Education
Jonathan Gray was born on February 4, 1970, in Highland Park, Illinois, to a Jewish family. His father owned an auto parts manufacturer, and his mother ran a catering business. Gray graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania in 1992, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Bachelor of Science from the Wharton School.
Rise to Success
Gray joined Blackstone's mergers and acquisitions and private equity group in 1992. He later joined the firm's real estate group in 1993 and became co-head in 2005, then global head in 2011. Under his leadership, Blackstone's real estate division became the largest commercial real estate platform in the world. A key achievement was orchestrating the $26 billion acquisition of Hilton Hotels in 2007, a deal that became one of the most profitable private equity real estate transactions ever. In 2018, Gray was promoted to President and COO of Blackstone.
Key Business Strategies
Gray has emphasized a thematic approach to investments, focusing on trends like e-commerce, life sciences, data centers, and the energy transition. He has also expanded Blackstone's client base to include insurers and individual investors. In 2023, Blackstone reached $1 trillion in assets under management and joined the S&P 500.
Philanthropy
Gray and his wife, Mindy, are actively involved in philanthropy through the Gray Foundation. They established the Basser Center for BRCA at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 2012, which focuses on BRCA-related cancers. They have also supported educational initiatives, including NYC Kids RISE, a college savings program for low-income children. In May 2025, it was announced that Gray plans on donating $125 million to Tel Aviv University's Faculty of Medicine.
