Early Life
Johnelle Terria DeBusk was born in Heber Springs, Arkansas, on January 4, 1932. Her father was a poultry farmer. She attended the University of Central Arkansas with plans to become a teacher but did not complete her degree.
Rise to Success
In 1952, she married Johnnie Bryan Hunt. In 1961, the Hunts co-founded the J.B. Hunt Company in Stuttgart, Arkansas, initially focusing on rice hull packaging. In 1969, they expanded into trucking, establishing J.B. Hunt Transport Services with five trucks and seven trailers. Johnelle Hunt was instrumental in the growth and success of their businesses. She held positions such as credit manager and corporate secretary.
Key Business Strategies
Johnelle and J.B. Hunt focused on innovation and taking calculated risks. They were pioneers in intermodal freight services. In 2008, Johnelle stepped down from her position as corporate secretary, but she has remained the firm's largest individual shareholder, holding a 19% stake.
Philanthropy
Johnelle Hunt has been involved in various philanthropic activities. She contributed $5 million towards the J.B. and Johnelle Hunt Family Ozark Highlands Nature Center. She has also served on boards such as the Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute Advisory Board and the Ozark Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
