Early Life
John A. Pritzker was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1953. He is a member of the Pritzker family, a prominent American business family with roots in Chicago. His father, Jay Pritzker, diversified the family business, the Marmon Group, building it into a portfolio of over 60 diversified industrial corporations. His mother, Marian “Cindy” Friend, and father, Jay Pritzker, instilled values of business and philanthropy early in his life.
Rise to Success
Pritzker's career started at Hyatt Hotels in 1972, rising to Managing Director and Divisional Vice President by 1984. In 1988, he ventured into entrepreneurial activities, founding Mandara Spa in 1996. He later co-founded the private equity firm Geolo Capital in 2005 with Tom Gottlieb. Geolo Capital focused on investments in hospitality, entertainment, and health & wellness companies. In 2011, Geolo Capital purchased a majority interest in the Joie de Vivre boutique hotel chain, later merging it with the Thompson Hotel Group to form Commune Hotels & Resorts. Commune Hotels later became Two Roads Hospitality.
