Early Life
John Gandel was born in Australia in 1935 to Polish-Jewish immigrants. His parents operated a corsetry store, providing him with early exposure to retail. He attended Melbourne High School, where he received his education.
Rise to Success
Gandel took control of his parents' women's clothing business, Sussan, in the 1950s. Alongside his brother-in-law, Marc Besen, he grew Sussan into a chain of over 200 stores. In 1983, Gandel purchased the Chadstone Shopping Centre, transforming it into a major retail destination. He sold Sussan in 1985 to focus on real estate, significantly increasing his wealth through shopping mall development.
Key Business Strategies
Gandel's success is attributed to his strategic vision in retail and property development. His acquisition and expansion of Chadstone Shopping Centre, and his investments in listed property companies, have been key to his financial growth. Gandel's business acumen, combined with the deregulation of shopping hours, enabled him to capitalize on the increasing popularity of shopping as a leisure activity.
Philanthropy
John Gandel and his wife, Pauline, established Gandel Philanthropy in 1978. The foundation supports Jewish and Australian causes, donating millions to education, medical research, and the arts. Their philanthropic efforts include substantial donations to the National Gallery of Australia, support for bushfire relief, and contributions to Museums Victoria. Gandel has also supported the Gandel Institute for Adult Jewish Learning at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
