John Christopher Armitage was born on December 20, 1959. He was educated at Eton College and earned a degree in modern history from Pembroke College, Cambridge in 1981.

Armitage began his career in 1981 at Morgan Grenfell. He became a director of Morgan Grenfell Asset Management from March 1991 until 1994. In 1994, Armitage co-founded Egerton Capital with William Bollinger. Egerton Capital has generated $23.9 billion of net gains since its inception in 1995, according to LCH Investments.
