Early Life and Education
Joel Kenneth Greenberg was born in 1957 or 1958. He earned a bachelor's degree from Binghamton University, where he met Jeff Yass, who later became his billionaire co-founder. He then obtained a Juris Doctor degree from Columbia Law School.
Rise to Success
In 1987, Greenberg co-founded Susquehanna International Group (SIG) and served as its chief operating officer. SIG has grown into one of the largest and most successful trading firms on Wall Street. Greenberg owns about 3% of Susquehanna and retired in 2016.
Key Business Strategies
Greenberg and his colleagues pioneered a probabilistic, game-theory-driven approach to trading, which became the hallmark of SIG. SIG's operations include trading and market making, private equity, and venture capital, with offices across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The firm invested in hundreds of private companies globally.
Philanthropy
Greenberg, along with his wife Marcy Gringlas, co-founded the Seed the Dream Foundation. The Seed the Dream Foundation has worked to improve educational outcomes and contributed to the development of a Holocaust curriculum centered on contemporary antisemitism. The Foundation has also been involved in supporting Holocaust survivors. Joel Greenberg is also the President of Art Ashes, a non-profit dedicated to assisting families in the recovery of Nazi-looted art.
