Early Life and Education
James E. "Jim" Thompson was born on January 14, 1940, in Jersey City, New Jersey, and later raised in Bayonne. His father served in the United States Navy, which led to frequent moves during his childhood, including a period in Guam. Thompson graduated from San Jose State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering.
Rise to Success
In 1965, with a mere $1,000, Thompson established Transport Services International in Yokohama, Japan, recognizing the need for international moving services. The company expanded into Hong Kong in 1970 and other Asia Pacific locations. In 1975, the company became Crown Pacific, and by the early 1980s, it was a leading moving company in Asia. Crown Worldwide Group was later established with offices across America, Australasia, and Europe. Thompson moved the company's headquarters to Hong Kong in 1978.
Key Business Strategies
Thompson focused on global expansion and diversification. Crown Worldwide Group is now a global logistics and relocation company with operations in 45 countries and over 3,000 employees. The company has diversified into document storage and fine arts transportation, which is a profitable segment. In 2019, he relinquished the CEO title to Ken Madrid, the then-chief financial officer.
Philanthropy
Thompson is involved in numerous charitable organizations. He supports causes related to children, cancer, and education. He has been awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star for his service to the Hong Kong community. He also chairs the annual Hike for Hospice charity event.
