Jed McCaleb was born on June 8, 1975, in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He spent his formative years in Little Rock, Arkansas. McCaleb attended the University of California, Berkeley, but did not complete his degree, choosing instead to pursue his passion for software development.
Rise to Success
McCaleb's career began in 2000 when he founded MetaMachine Inc. and released the eDonkey2000 application. This peer-to-peer file-sharing network became one of the largest of its time. In 2010, he founded Mt. Gox, the first major Bitcoin exchange, which he later sold. In 2011, McCaleb began developing the Ripple protocol, a digital currency system. McCaleb co-founded Ripple in 2012. He co-founded the Stellar Development Foundation in 2014, with the goal of facilitating cross-border monetary transactions. In 2021, he founded Vast, an aerospace company with the mission to develop artificial gravity space stations.
