Jayme Brasil Garfinkel was born on November 30, 1945, into a Jewish family in Brazil. He received a degree in Civil Engineering from the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo in 1970 and completed graduate studies in Business Administration at Getúlio Vargas College in 1975.

Garfinkel's career took a pivotal turn in 1972 when he joined Porto Seguro as an Assistant Executive Officer. He rapidly climbed the corporate ladder, becoming the Executive Officer Vice President in 1978. His leadership was crucial in transforming Porto Seguro into a leading auto insurer. Garfinkel's strategic vision led to the company's growth, and under his guidance, Porto Seguro offered personalized services, increasing its market value.
