Early Life and Family Business
Jaran Chiaravanont was born in Bangkok. He began his career in the 1950s by managing the Charoen Pokphand shop. His family founded the Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group), a Thai conglomerate. In the 1920s, Chia Ek Chor, Jaran's grandfather, started the business as a seed shop.
Rise to Success
During the 1970s, CP Group expanded into the supply of chicken and eggs, effectively establishing a virtual monopoly in Thailand. The company became known for vertical integration, adding breeding farms, slaughterhouses, and processed food production. Jaran played a significant role in the company's early expansion into livestock feeds, which then diversified into poultry and aquaculture.
Key Business Strategies
CP Group expanded internationally, exporting its contract farming model to Southeast Asia, Mexico, Taiwan, and the United States. In the 1980s, the company ventured into aquaculture and, later, into the retail and telecommunications sectors. CP Group also entered the China market in the 1980s, becoming the first foreign investor in Shenzhen. The company further diversified into retail, telecommunications, and petrochemicals. Key acquisitions include 7-Eleven convenience stores and KFC franchises.
