Brown's career began in the insurance industry. In 1961, he founded Brown & Brown, Inc.. Under his leadership, Brown & Brown grew significantly. He served as CEO from 1961 to 2009, and the company expanded from a local, family-owned business to a global enterprise. He also served in the Florida House of Representatives, becoming Speaker of the House.
