Early Life and Education
Ivan Glasenberg was born on January 7, 1957, in Johannesburg, South Africa, to Jewish parents who immigrated from Lithuania. He grew up in Illovo, a suburb of Johannesburg. In his youth, he excelled as an athlete, becoming a national junior champion in race walking. Glasenberg's educational background includes a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Accountancy from the University of the Witwatersrand and an MBA from the University of Southern California (1983).
Rise to Success
Glasenberg's career began in 1984 when he joined Glencore, then a small trading company. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming head of the coal department in 1991 and CEO in 2002. Under his leadership, Glencore expanded significantly, notably through the merger with Xstrata in 2013, creating a mining giant. Glasenberg oversaw Glencore's IPO in 2011, which was one of the largest in history.
